Sean O'Bryan Smith - Man for All Basses
With nearly twenty years of experience in virtually every musical genre, Sean O'Bryan Smith has become one of the most celebrated and highly sought after bass players in the music industry. The combination of virtuoso bass technique, a high-energy stage presence, and the ability to adapt to all types of music has landed Sean in an enormous variety of different musical situations.
Born in Chattanooga, TN, Sean started playing professionally at the young age of 15. Sean's biggest musical influence is his mother, blues and jazz singer Bebe Hannon. Everything from Ray Charles to Beethoven was common listening growing up and played an important role in his musical advancement. Sean moved to Seattle in 1990 to pursue a professional music career on the West Coast. Sean was involved with players of the bustling "Seattle" sound, but still had an opportunity to get involved in the local blues and jazz scenes. He also spent a large part of his time as a teacher and doing commercial session work.
Sean returned to Tennessee in the early-90s and jumped right back into the Southeast music scene. He formed his first original project, the jazz fusion group Ivory Punch, with whom he toured extensively. They released their 1995 debut CD "A Touch of Ivory Live" and are currently working on their reunion CD "Seven Year Itch." Throughout the groups six year run, Sean and the boys opened up for a wide array of artists including Edwin McCain, Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Kermit Ruffins, Fattburger, Eddie Palmieri and more. In addition to his original project, Sean found himself in high demand as a sideman and session bassist with various local and national acts. This demand drew Sean to Nashville in 1999.
Upon his arrival in Nashville, Sean established himself as a session bassist working to develop aspiring artists. He has recorded and performed with many local favorites and in 2001, Sean began working in conjunction with Curb Records as a touring bassist with country artist Rodney Atkins and jazz vocalist Anna Wilson. Since then, Sean has performed with a list of Major and Independent label recording artists as diverse as his musical tastes including country music legend Billy Ray Cyrus, pop singer/songwriter Nissi, contemporary Christian superstar Rebecca St. James, and country music chart toppers Cyndi Thomson, Jimmy Wayne, Buddy Jewell, and Robin English, as well as opening up for a large list of major label artists all over the United States. In addition to touring, Sean continues to be a highly sought after studio musician. Some of Sean's current projects include recording the upcoming CDs " Fool's Dream" with Justin Conn, Nissi Bergman's upcoming Vibe Records release, the new record by blues man Gypsy Carns on Musark Records, and Anna Wilson's upcoming Transfer Records release "Time Changes".
In 2006, Sean has already begun to further his recording career with various artists as well as increase his involvement with the growing electronic music scene. This is ultimately culminated in his highly anticipated solo album "Tapestry" on Black Rose Records due out in November of 2006 with a corresponding US Tour in 2007. The CD is a highly ambitious offering of instrumental music featuring some of the top sidemen and players in the industry including legendary guitar player Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Jerry Marotta ( Peter Gabriel, Sarah McLachlan ), Ken Rarick ( Cher, Madonna ), Rich Eckhardt ( Toby Keith ), Mel Watts ( Wilson Pickett, Garth Brooks ), Johnny Barranco ( Barry Manilow ), Monty Powell ( Keith Urban, Rascall Flatts ) and Teddy Andreadis ( Alice Cooper, Guns 'n Roses ). Sean will be filling all of the bass roles playing fretted, fretless, muti-string, electric upright, and tenor basses as well as rhythm guitar and some keyboards.
Sean uses our WT800, WT405 and WTX260 heads to power various combinations of the following cabinets: D410XLT (2), D112XLT (2), D210XST and D210XLT. Sean says his reason for using Eden is simple: "My Eden gear is the single most important improvement to my tone in two and a half decades.
