Beautifully Aggressive
Greg Magnuson started his musical career early. Being the son of a classically trained opera singer and music teacher, he started piano lessons at age 5 and began singing in the church choir. He learned saxophone at age 9, and progressed to guitar at age 14. However, as is so often the case, he found his true voice when a friend needed a bass player in his band. He soon became familiar with work of players such as Flea, Jaco Pastorius, Les Claypool, and Muzz Skillings. Hours of wood shedding later, he began his quest of blending the melodies and pop sensibilities of British new wave from bands like The Smiths and The Cure with more intricate musical textures of projects like King Crimson, Primus, and The Dead Kennedys.
His first project, Phydeaux produced indie label success throughout the Midwest. From there, Greg moved to California. With his sights on loftier goals, he expanded to other genres playing with a variety of local San Diego and LA artists including the groove metal project SYNDICATE, the Latin jazz ensemble THE LYNX GROOVE PROJECT, LA pop favorites The ADAM DANIEL FREQUENCY, and folk dance favorites THE J-BAND. Many opportunities followed, including a 5-week European Tour with the band SLUKA, providing the chance to play his own acoustic material on Czech Radio. He also toured and recorded with the LA pop rock group Four Star Mary throughout England.
He currently fronts the progressive indie rock project MAGNUSON, a 3-piece audio assault which has been described as "beautiful musical aggression." Their upcoming 5 song EP titled "The Struggle Within" features delicate harmonies layered with intense drum beats, tasty guitar riffs and mesmerizing fretless bass work. Uniquely, Greg uses our Eden WT800 head and D410XLT, D210XLT and D212XLT cabinets to power his work as a "lead bassist" taking many opportunities to solo and step out in a way that would normally be reserved for the guitarist. The band's popularity in So Cal is growing and they look to release a music video and a full length album later this year with sights on touring sometime in September 06.
Greg is a perfect example of a bass player who understands the role of the instrument in various genres and can move flawlessly from rhythm section player, to lead bassist and front man. Hence his choice of Eden gear. He says he gets "versatility and uncompromised tone in any situation."
