Exploring the Depths of Blues and Roots Music
For Jay Turner, the roll of bass player means creating a personal style while supporting the other elements within the band. "It's all about the music, listening to the song and then focusing on performing a great bass part that will add to the song," notes Jay from his home near Baltimore, MD. "You know, it's more about giving to the song rather than just laying down a cool part."
This desire for cohesive ensemble playing is exactly what draws musicians to Jay. Over the course of his career of twenty-something years, he has worked as performer, arranger, composer, music director, bandleader and instructor for countless artists, resulting in a reputation as "a musician's musician."
To say that Jay's career has been impressive would be an understatement. He studied at Berklee College of Music, on a scholarship! He has toured extensively and performed on countless sessions. In fact, he has been extremely busy over the past year, performing on eleven commercial releases and several demos, in addition to working in New York, Nashville and the Baltimore/Washington, DC area on a regular basis. Just the few of the people he has worked with are Joanna Cotton (serving as her Musical Director since 1997), Tommy Lepson (Powerhouse Records), and American folk-blues hero Catfish Hodge. On the solo front, Jay has released three self-produced recordings to date. Plans are currently underway for a fourth release (title and street date TBA).
Jay uses an Eden Road Runner that has had the power section bumped up to 800 watts, a WT550, D210MBW and D410T cabinets, and a CXC110 combo. Because excellent tone is so important to him, he won't use anything but Eden. "It's a plug and play event every time," he says. "I've never have had to do any E-Q surgery and the cabinets throw just the right amount. And, yeah, I've got to say, I've got great tone!" |
