John Dunn - Bass Fit for a (Lion) King
Deeply rooted in the rich and renowned Detroit music scene, John Dunn has been a first call bassist for over 17 years in all styles. He's backed dozens of Motown label artists, recorded thousands of jingles, soundtracks and sound design at the top Detroit and Midwest production houses and has more than a decade and a half of solid live/touring work under his belt.
When the Dirty Dozen Brass Band needed a "sub" at a mere two-hour's notice, they knew John was the only guy who could get the job done. Other notable live work includes members of the Funk Brothers, Eminems' co-writer Luis Resto, Martha Reeves, David Ruffin, violinist Regina Carter and saxophonist Dave Leibman.
His latest recording credits include bass work on Sponge's last two releases For All The Drugs in the World, and The Man. And Bona Dea Record's star artist, Liz Larin and her latest release Wake up, Start Dreaming. If you've ever seen TV commercials, you've heard John. Dozens of producers know his wide adaptability and professionalism make him the ideal bassist for any application.
John can currently be seen …err, "heard" on the record-smashing national tour of Disney's the Lion King. He is fortunate enough to have in his current rhythm section, none other than Bobby Economou. Together they lay it down for the varied and hard hitting grooves of the show.
John proudly uses several Eden rigs. "Back home, my basement looks like a show room!" For the Lion King pit, John uses a CXC210 combo. For other work he can choose from WT800, WT550 and WT400 amplifiers to power a pair of D410XLTs, a D115XLT and a 210XLT. Or he can just grab his DC210XLT Metro and go. "No other amplifiers give me the tonal range, the options, the depth and the dependability," John says. "I'll cut a jingle for television in the morning, perform a noon-time, outdoor jazz concert, play a Broadway show in the evening and finish the day with a grinding, midnight set and use one amplifier day in and day out - my Edens."
