Metal Meets Symphony
|
You may not realize it, but northern Europe is home to an extremely active audience for both Metal and classical music. Recently, endorser Magnus Rosen, of quintessential Nordic Metal band Hammerfall, was invited to perform as featured soloist with the Swedish National Symphony Orchestra.
Magnus and the orchestra played an astonshing thriteen performances in only five days in late September to a combined total of more than 100,000 people, as well as 150,000,000 TV viewers across Europe. The highlight of the show was an extended bass solo, written by Mangnus in partnership with the Orchestra.
This isn't the first foray into non-Metal territory for the bass master. Magnus has toured the world with his solo Jazz show, an excellent display of chops meets musicality. The one-man show is especially popular in south America, drawing as many as 100,000 fans to single concert. Much of Magnus' profit from these shows stays in-country through significant donations to numerous charities. In fact, Rosen is coordinating production of a charity performance with the National Symphony Orchestra of Brazil. If all goes as planned, the concerts will take place in late 2007. |

Bill Clements in November Bass Player
|
The November, 2006, issue of Bass Player magazine includes an interview with Eden/Nemesis endorser Bill Clements in their Bass Notes section. (See page 24.) Written by Alan Goldsher, the article focuses on Bill's one-handed tapping technique. In other news, Bill recently returned from a trip to San Francisco to record several new tracks with drummer (and longtime friend) Tommy Ufkes. The recording was done at Radical House Studio and also featured an all-star lineup of musicians. "I was really happy with the way things turned out," said Bill. Ariane Cap Goes Camping
|
When she's not touring with Tempest or one of her many other projects, Ariane Cap goes . . . camping? Well, after a fashion, yes.
Recently, Ariane took part in the Jackson Hole Rock ad Roll Camp in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Produced by the Jackson Hole Music Experience and the Journey's School, this annual camp gathers dozens of young musicians to play and learn from top professionals and educators. The students learn about all facets of playing in a band, including songwriting, rehearsing, and creating monster grooves. "It was a blast," said Ariane. "All of the campers were very talented and motivated. I always love to teach, but getting to teach several dozen students at once was a real thrill."

Mark Egan Releases New CD
 |
Long term Eden endorser Mark Egan is nne of the premier electric bassists of contemporary jazz, and has distinguished himself as an in-demand session player, valued sideman and respected leader in his own right. His distinctive fretless bass sound has graced countless jazz and pop albums as well as award winning movie and television soundtracks. Now, he's raised the bar again, releasing an ambitious 2-CD set, As We Speak, on his own Wavetone records.
The wide open blowing and improvisational abandon heard on As We Speak is a change in direction from the bassist's previous Wavetone release, Freedom Town. "That was a collection of songs that I had composed and produced at my studio, Electric Fields," says Mark of that 2001 outing. "It was based more on my compositions and orchestrations featuring such great musicians as Bill Evans and Lew Soloff, in contrast to a bass trio improvisation feature, which is what this new recording is all about. I wanted to capture an intimate as well as progressive side of my playing on a recording."
As We Speak features jazz heavyweights John Abercrombie (guitar) and Danny Gottleib (drums), both of whom turn in incredible performances. "I wanted to go for a very open and extended approach for this one," Mark says "I love playing in a creative trio setting and I don't feel that I have ever captured a side of my playing on record where I have done as much extended playing as I do on this one. I really wanted to explore that side of my playing in a setting with such great musicians as John Abercrombie and Danny Gottlieb ".

Eden Rocks Europe
 |
Endorsers Rev Jones and Uriah Duffy crossed paths at the Wacken Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany, this past weekend. Rev is currently on a global tour with the Michael Schenker Group while Uriah is doing the same with Whitesnake. The two hung out back stage, comparing notes, trading tour horror stories, talking shop and comparing their Eden Mega-rigs.
Both bands turned in blazing performances at the festival, which hosted more than 70,000 fans this year. (Some reports claim 100,000 in attendance.) Whitesnake and MSG are still on tour in Europe, so you still have a chance to catch two of the hottest acts on tour this year. For more info, check the links below:

Zach Fowler Rocks Sturgis

Zach Fowler rips it up with The James Douglas Show.
For more info, check out Myspace.com for Zach's page, and The James Douglas Show page. Also, see Zach's bio. |
Zach Fowler, bassist for The James Douglas Show is gearing up for a busy August. Last night he performed with Brothas on Bass, a bass trio, opening a clinic/concert for Trip Wamsley at the Windchime Champagne Gallery in his hometown of Albuquerque, NM. In addition to his set with B.O.B., Zach debuted his solo bass arrangement of John Legend's Ordinary People.
Zach and the rest of The James Douglas Show will now head to Sturgis, SD, for the inaugural Rock'n the Rally music festival August 6-10. The festival will run in conjunction with the Sturgis Bike Rally, arguably the largest annual motorcycle rally in the country. The band will share the stage with performers such as Sammy Hagar, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Keith Urban, Cheap Trick, Nickelback, Big'n Rich, Joe Cocker, Steve Miller Band, Buckcherry, The Black Crowes, and many others. Not only is The James Douglas Show the first and only rhythm-and-blues band to perform at the festival, but they are also the only band that will be playing multiple shows at the event, including a headlining spot at the Cabo Wabo stage. The festival is expected to attract over 300,00 people.
The James Douglas Show is also preparing for the release of their new album, Garden City Music. Although the album is not slated for release until September 1, advanced copies of the album will be available at the Rock'n the Rally music festival. A tour to promote the album is also in the works.
For his busy playing schedule, Zach will be using his Eden rig…a DC210XLT Metro combo with a D212XLT extension cabinet. "I'm really looking forward to using my Eden rig on the big stage," Zach said. "It may be a small-sized rig compared to some, put it packs an incredible punch, while still delivering the best tone imaginable! That's the great thing about Eden…all I have to do is play, and my Eden rig makes everything sound SO nice!" |

StrangeLand Rocks 'em at Cornerstone Festival

Left to Right -
Karl Mustard (vocals), Wes Watson (bass) and Kevin Schmitt (guitar) of StrangeLand rock the house, er, tent, at Cornerstone.
Read Wes' Bio |
This past weekend, Christian Metal band StrangeLand made two appearances at one of the oldest and largest Christian festivals of the summer - Cornerstone. Hosted on more than 200 acres in the small community of Bushnell, IL, this year's festival garnered attendance of 15,000.
"StrangeLand was very blessed to be invited," says bassist and founding member of StrangeLand, Wes Watson. "Thanks to our relationship with U.S. Music [StrangeLand endorses Eden and Randall amplifiers], we had some of the best gear there - and were more than happy to share it with the other bands." Bands such as Ultimatum, from California, LoPhat, from Arizona, Gretchen, from Tennessee, Crimson Moonlight, from Sweden, and Man Alive, from Israel, were among the bands that used the various gear StrangeLand was able to offer. Thanks to an 18,000 watt PA, 2 full Randall guitar stacks, and a stack & a half (410XLT & 210T) bass rig, powered by a WT-550; the bands were heard well, very well."
"The bass player from Ultimatum was especially ecstatic - I don't think he touched a single knob - everything was flat - and he raved about the tone! And personnally, that was one of the best parts of the experience - being able to share that awesome tone with everyone!"
In addition to providing backline and sound for the event, StrangeLand played 2 sets at the Sanctuary Tent - provided by SanctuaryInternation.com - home of Pastor Bob Beeman (Bobfest in Sweden being another of the many festivals he heads up every year). To view more pictures from the event, check out StrangeLand's website. |
Stuart Watkins on Tour with East Village Opera Company

Stuart Watkins on the set for Miss America |
We recently caught up with Stuart Watkins; lately he's been doing some very cool gigs with the East Village Opera Company, which features members who have performed with the Who, Sheryl Crow, Santana and Blue Man Group, to name a few. "It's a cool gig, to say the least," Stuart says, then laughs. "I love working with this band."
Recently, the EVOC was the house band for the Miss USA 2006 pageant. Stuart has links to two clips from the live telecast on his My Space page. Then, they headed for Hong Kong to play to sold-out audiences, including the premiere of the Da Vinci Code, complete with full-blown media and TV blitz.
We can't talk about it yet, but it looks as if Stuart will be back in Asia before the end of the year. Keep an eye out here for news. |

Bill Clements Among First to Appear on New Bass Video Site
 |
Eden/Nemesis endorser Bill Clements is among the first bassists to be featured on Bass Player Magazine's new video site, Bass Player TV. The five clips available are taken from a promotional DVD Bill produced earlier this year in association with Eden. In addition to three performance clips recorded live in-studio, Bill talks about the features on his Nemesis NA650 amplifier and answers questions about his unique style.
"I was floored when I heard the news," Clements said in a recent telephone interview. "When we submitted the DVD, we thought [Bass Player] might use one or two of the performance clips. Instead, they used the entire disk. I can't tell you how thrilled I am and how much I appreciate the support."
"We're very proud that Bill is one of the first players to be featured on the site," said Special Projects Coordinator Lane Baldwin. "He's not only a great player; he's also an inspiration to anyone who's ever had to overcome an obstacle in their life."

Steve Cook on Tour with Trent Tomlinson
 |
Long-time Eden endorser, Band 101 columnist - and this month's (featured artist) - Steve Cook is back on the road again, joining a superstar band with country bad boy Trent Tomlinson for his extensive touring schedule. Trent is not new on the music scene. He's been writing songs for other artists for years in Nashville, and now is an artist in his own right. Trent is known for his bar anthem the top-20 hit 'Drunker Than Me', and for his amazingly energetic live show.
Steve couldn't be happier with his new band. "They call it country, but it really is a rock band," he says. "The raw energy literally drips from the stage, and I leave my cowboy hat at home. Trent performs like there is no tomorrow, and we all take that approach on stage. It's wonderful"
Trent's tour has him criss-crossing the country every week from now until the end of the year. They will be sharing the stage with the likes of Toby Keith, Big & Rich, and Trace Atkins. For more info, check out Trent's music or Steve's website for the latest in tour dates and info.

Shooting the (Pit) Bull
Pit musicians performing with different musicals don't often get to hang out with each other. So when old friends (and Eden endorsers) Dennis Michaels (at left) and Michael Gerry (at right) spent an afternoon in Philadelphia, PA, they made sure to take pictures to prove it really happened. "It was a great coffee-hang time," said Dennis, who is currently on tour with Joseph and Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. "We've actually understudied each other over the years, but haven't seen each other for a few years."
The two pit warriors compared notes on their Eden rigs and shared war stories from the road. "It was really nice to have an Endorsers' Day Out," said Michael, currently on tour with Les Miserables. "I hope we'll cross paths again soon."

During his presentation, he performed with his long-time collaborator, drummer Tony Ufkes.

Wes Watson Teaches "Elementary" Lesson
Eden endorser Wes Watson likes to keep himself busy - not just with music-related activities, but also kid-related things as well. That's why the bassist for StrangeLand, a Christian-Metal band, recently spent a day at C.B. Smith Elementary School in his hometown of Pekin, IL.
"I started out doing some short computer lessons - "Computer Guts" was very popular", explains Watson. "Computer Guts was basically me disassembling a computer and showing the kids some technical details about what's inside - something they don't get to see very often".
Since his children often brag about their "Rock Star Dad", many of the kids in school - and their teachers - know about Wes' band, "I had a request to do a presentation on music related things - specifically dealing with the band - and the equipment I use. Obviously, my Eden rig came to mind as something sure to capture the kids attention!".
Without breaking any noise violations, Wes was able to show off the intricacies of how sound works through waves (which related to the second graders current science unit) with his Eden WT550 and D410T speaker cab. "You could see the kids faces light up when I'd hit a note on the E string! And when they got to touch the speaker and feel the cones move, they were seeing something most kids don't get to - they got to "see" sound as it happened."
Wes has been asked back to give his music presentation to other classes as soon as time allows. In addition, he is coordinating a field trip to The NoiseGate recording studio, co-owned by Mike Layne and StrangeLand guitarist Kevin Grose. The students will be able to see something kids (and most adults) never get to see: the inner workings of a professional recording studio.

StrangeLand Invades Europe
The band StrangeLand was recently featured in
Heavy Order Was. The German metal magazine, one of the top of the genre in Germany, reviewed StrangeLand's demo release (
StrangeLand, 2005). Since the magazine article appeared, sales of the band's demo have been 'brisk' in Germany, according to band bassist and Eden Endorser, Wes Watson. Recently, StrangeLand also got an excellent response to their demo in the
Heaven's Metal, a fanzine from the folks that put out
HM Magazine.
According to Watson (StrangeLand bassist and web master), "We're tried and true Americans, and we love the USA. Given that - we've always been partial to our European fan-base, since we know that melodic metal has strong support in countries such as Germany, Norway, Finland, and Sweden."
Since the magazine article, the band has not only had increased CD sales, but have been contacted by other interested European magazines, as well as from a German record company. "It's exciting that so many folks, from some very diverse places" continues Watson, "places where we have never been, much less played, are excited about what StrangeLand is doing. Very exciting indeed!"
Profits from current sales of StrangeLand's CD are being donated to relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina.

Bloodline, a Christian Contemporary R&B group led by Eden endorser Kim Farrar, has been selected to perform at the 2006 Holy Hip Hop Music Awards at the Earthlink Arena in Atlanta, GA on January 13th. Barbarian Shows Softer Side.
Many musicians have pitched in to help in the relief effort for the victims of the hurricanes that have recently plagued the south. One highly successful effort was quickly put together to provide financial assistance for families that had been re-located to Kansas City.
Over $100,000.00 was raised during a concert at the open-air Starlight Theater. The concert featured the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra as well as various celebrities and leading performers from the city’s highly acclaimed jazz and blues community. Featured artists included Oleta Adams, Kelly Hunt and legendary Kansas City blues shouter, Annetta “Cotton Candy” Washington. Cotton’s bass player, affectionately known as John the Barbarian is a devoted Eden endorser.
Said John of the event. “By the time the concert rolled around the corporate sponsors alone had provided enough money that they made it a free concert with voluntary donations. It was a great event held on a great stage in a city with a heart of gold.”
