Keeping the Tradition Alive

From an early age, Pat Ellwood always knew he wanted to play music. He grew up in Spartanburg, South Carolina only a few blocks from the basement rehearsal space of a local band that was always practicing their tunes and honing their stage skills for that day when they would get that big break, catch the eye of the right promoter or record executive, and be on the way up that long ladder of success. Well, they did. That small garage band went on to become The Marshall Tucker Band of Southern Rock fame. Pat was there listening every chance he got, and always checking out their equipment when he was around them, thanks to his childhood friend Tim Caldwell, brother of Toy and Tommy Caldwell of the Marshall Tucker Band. Pat best sums up his feelings about those days in his own words:

"Tommy Caldwell was probably the biggest influence in my musical career since I was fortunate enough to have known him at an early age. I grew up in the same neighborhood as Tommy and his brother, Toy. Their younger brother Tim and I went through school together and he introduced them to me. Tommy encouraged me to play the bass. He showed me a few runs and even loaned me his Fender Bassman amp for one of my first gigs. Since Tommy's tragic passing in 1980 he has been sorely missed by all who knew him. Everyone knows his presence can never be replaced in The Marshall Tucker Band, but I definitely consider it an honor and privilege just to fill in for him in his absence."

Pat is carrying on the tradition of the true Southern Rock style of music by playing bass with the current version of the Marshall Tucker Band which also includes: Doug Gray- original lead singer, David Muse- original member of Firefall and now keyboard, flute, and saxophonist, Stuart Swanlund- slide guitarist with the band for 19 years, Chris Hicks- from The Outlaws and now lead guitarist with MTB, and Barry "B.B." Borden, originally with Mother's Finest, and also The Outlaws, now playing drums. This All-Star collection of amazing artists are touring 130 plus dates a year, keeping the memory and the legacy of music that started in 1973 alive and well to this day, and hopefully far into the future.

Pat uses our WT800 to power D410XLT and D115XT cabinets "because of the natural sound it provides without having to use a lot of equalization or effects," he says. "It brings out the pure sound of the instrument. I have found the Eden products to be very road worthy and dependable."
