The Sean O'Bryan Smith Blog

Sean O'Bryan SmithAs if he doesn't have enough to do already, we asked Sean O'Bryan Smith to blog about his life as an UberBusy Nashville Bassist. In addition to being an in-demand bassist for sessions and live dates, he's got his own solo act ("my Circus Freak Act"), his production duties, and now, serves as Musical Director for a new Prime Time TV show.

On top of all that, Sean writes. A lot. Usually about bass. It all began with his Music Business Survival column here on our site. Next thing you know, he was invited to provide a Soap Box article for Bass Player Magazine. Now, he's got his own blog, in which he'll write about bass . . . and whatever else he has on his mind. So grab a cup of coffee and follow along with one of Nashville's busiest bassists.

July 16, 2008 - Limping Along

Greetings Groovers,

I showed back up and actually played my gig.Your injured but high-spirited Baldy Locks reporting for duty. If you read my blog last week you're aware of my "mishap" at my last show. Last Monday I stepped on a piece of trim on a stage that gave way and I took a dive. Needless to say there have been multiple doctor visits and therapists since. My old band director in high school always told me that if I make a mistake to do it with conviction. That is not an issue here.

Your boy tore his ACL, partially tore his MCL, and has a micro fracture in his knee. WAY TO GO FOOL!!!! That being said, there will be many shows with me in a brace coming up. I've decided that I'm gonna snag me a pimping cane and make it hip. I might as well have fun with this. Seriously though it could have been much worse and I greatly appreciate all my family, friends, and fans that have been showing all of their great support.

Honorable mention has to go out to my fiancé Jami for being by my side constantly. It makes all of this much easier to go through for sure. I may not be on the dance floor soon but as long as my hands work I'm still good. This was proven the night I had the injury when I showed back up and actually played my gig. I am such a moron but the show slammed.

Denny JiosaI'm seriously stoked about a number of upcoming collaborations. I'm going to be taking a break from live performance to recover from surgery and allow my knee to heal. This actually ended up being perfect timing, as I start a couple of recording projects. I am working on a side project with smooth jazz guitarist Denny Jiosa as we speak. Denny has the #4 single in the country right now and we are working on putting together a tour for '09 as well as a number of projects together.

Denny is an astounding player and good friend. He came out and performed with my band the night of my injury and tore the show up. There is a natural chemistry to our music that I'm excited about and I'm bringing Denny in to play on my new solo CD that will start tracking in the Fall, as well as an exclusive download only single that will be out in a few months.

Thanks again to everyone who has been helping me out with my injury. Many thanks to my mother, my dear Jami, percussionist Chris Nelson, my business partner Rich Krainak, Pastor Jeff Simmons, and everyone else who has called me Gimpy, Hopalong, Festus, or some other D-Bag remark. Love you all.

Until next time.

July 23, 2008 - Still Limpin'

Greetings, Groovers and Groovettes,

Sean O'Bryan SmithSince I've been down with the blown out knee there hasn't been a ton of musical adventures. I've been rapidly catching up on some freelance writing deadlines for magazines as well as reviewing some new products for various manufacturers. Leave it to me to even stay busy in my relatively non-mobile state. As I have mentioned before I am indeed a MORON!

Pre-production is underway for a new single that's coming out in the Fall. This will be a download-only single that is NOT on the CD Tapestry. Numerous radio stations are onboard to play the single during the holidays and it will feature some of the jazz industry's top players. Keep your ear out for more news.

Speaking of Tapestry, reviews keep coming in raving about the CD. The latest review is from the current issue of Performer Magazine. Kat Coffin of Performer says "Tapestry is not only something a jazz aficionado would appreciate; any music fan could enjoy this eclectic collection of compositions." This is one in a long line of great reviews from the CD. Response from radio has been just as positive. John Louis of WWSP Stevens Point remarked that ""His artistry as a bass player and producer are difficult to match." I am currently putting together dates for a 2009 tour. In the meantime you can still pick up Tapestry at CDbaby, iTunes, Amazon.com, Target.com, and MyEmpireStore.com.

Finally, I am officially on vacation starting tomorrow. I'm headed down to beautiful Gulf Shores to fall off the radar with my fiance'. The next week or so is dedicated to sun, surf, shrimp, and no cell phone. I hope everyone is having a great Summer and I look forward to seeing most of you on tour over the next few months. Until next time...
