The NAMM Show and What it Can Do for You - by Steve Cook

Saturday, January 21 - Are We Done Yet?

Saturday is the big day. The most people, the most activity. We were swamped with people in the booth darn near all day.

Oh.

My.

WORD!

Caffeine was the word of the day. I started with eight shots of espresso with an equal amount of steamed dairy product, LOTS of sugar and a little chocolate powder. I did NOT stop there.

Anyhoo...the day seemed to last about a week and a half. But, in spite of that, it was incredibly fun. We got to put faces to names of forum friends and to hang with some of our most supportive endorsers and dealers. While this is the most extensive set of photos so far, it doesn't come anywhere near to covering all the people we crossed paths with. One of the reasons for that is it wasn't always easy to get to the camera. (We had to hide it to make sure it wasn't "borrowed".)

The NAMM Police clamped down us again today. It seems as if it isn't really the noise, it's the crowds we've drawn to our booth with some very tasty demos. I guess they don't like it when those crowds block the aisle for more than a few minutes. Well, we can't help it if our endorsers attract serious attention. Anyway, it wasn't long before they shut us down entirely, telling us we couldn't have any more shows on our small stage. OK. Fine. We'll just go into the back of our booth and play there.

Once the official business was completed, it was time for some serious schmoozing and food at Bass Player Magazine's party at La Casa Garcia a few blocks away. David and I were fortunate to have a nice, long chat with Bill Leigh and Greg Olwell about what Eden has accomplished in the past year and what we hope to achieve in 2006.

Man! It's 1:30 in the morning - and I've been up since 6:30. That's like, what, three days ago. I'm the epitome of tired right about now. So, I'm going to stop typing and let the pictures tell the rest of the story. (The captions were completed before this short write-up.

Hope you have enjoyed what we've put up here. We've got more coming over the next few days and I'll do a wrap-up for this coming Wednesday's web load. See you tomorrow...if I survive.

One of several Edenites (forum members) to drop by the booth was LowFreq - AKA Michael Kulick. "It was very cool to meet him after getting to know him so well through the forum," Lane said.

These two win the Shameless Self-Promotion prize, hands down. They managed to snag a couple of Visitor badges and get past security with two pairs of stilts. This was probably due to the fact that, other than the stilts, they weren't too much different from many attendees. Anyhoo....once inside, they mounted their stilts and began to attract attention - and a ton of amateur photographers. They strode through the show handing out postcard-sized ads for a performance by their band, Powder. Only in LA, folks....only in LA.

Lane takes time for a photo with Tony Alvarez - known to Edenites the world over as Planetary Citizen. It appears that, for this week, at least, Tony's feet are planted firmly on the ground. (You'd have to have seen his Edenite Rig Pic to get this. Otherwise, "Move along. These aren't the droids we're looking for...)

Things got pretty intense as Bill and Rev warmed up and really got into things.

Seth Horan does everything from clinics, to solo performances, to duo and trio gigs. What makes him so unique is that he actually writes songs with lyrics - you know, verse / chorus / verse / chorus...that kind of thing...but the music is totally centered around his bass. Lane and Seth have been playing phone and email tag for months...but it looks as if they'll finally be able to get serious about finding the Eden rig that's Seth's "Thunder Rig".

Snow Owl, Lane and Rev discuss ideas for the web
site. No promises, but some of the things on the
table are Edenite concert reviews, Tour diaries
and more...

We haven't shown him yet, because he's not a
bassist - much less an Edentie. But here's a shot
of Dave Martone, who performed several times
each day, promoting Randall and Parker. Shown
here with Steve and John, Dave made the show a lot
of fun. "Not only is he a great guitarist, with an
amazing sense of character and humor to his work,"
Lane said, "he's just a such a wonderful person -
a lot of fun to hang out with."

Lane looks on as Uriah demonstrates his two-handed approach, which adds high-end, chordal double stops over a left-hand-tapped funk groove. "It was a total Master Class," Lane said, "all in about five minutes. That short stint is going to put me back into the wood shed for hundreds of hours."

Endorsers Bill Clements and Rev Jones wouldn't let the forced shut-down of the stage stop them from jamming. They went to the back of the Eden area and plugged into a pair of Nemesis rigs and headed off into unknown territory.
