D112XLT - Good Things Come in Small Packages

Not every bassist needs a huge, stadium-sized rig. Many are looking for a small, easy-to-transport package that still has great tone. Others are looking to build a modular rig to address varying needs. The D112XLT is an excellent choice for both situations.

Rated at 250 Watts RMS (at 8 Ohms), the D112XLT is an excellent match to our WT405 amplifier, as this head puts out 250 Watts into an 8 Ohm load. Adding a second cabinet brings the wattage up to 405 into a 4 Ohm load, and delivers 200 Watts to each cabinet. Add a third, and you'll get about 190 Watts into each cabinet. One Edenite, Jeff Carlson, has just such a rig. We'll talk more about that in a minute.

The big question is: How does it sound? David and his gang of technical wizards voiced the D112XLT to sound very aggressive, with the mid-range authority users have come to expect from Eden. Frequency response goes down to 32Hz, so the bottom end is deep and full. And at 103dB sensitivity, this little cabinet delivers amazing volume for its size.

Like the rest of the XLT line, the D112XLT features our Cast Bell tweeter for a high end that's smooth and clear. The tweeter level (on the back plate) allows the user to dial in the perfect amount of high end. The cabinet is hand tuned to ensure even response and excellent tone.

So, that's what we have to say about the D112XLT. But what about others? Here are some comments we've received from bassists currently using this cabinet in their rigs:

Stuart Holme is a regular member of our forum and was kind enough to allow us to publish his review of the DC112XLT. He uses one as an extension speaker for his DC210XLT Metro:

[T]he D112XLT sounded very much like a studio monitor. It is flat, flat, flat- both in frequency response, and as a description of the tone, although perhaps 'dry' is a better description of the tone. It is definitely not bass-heavy, although not bass-shy, has great mids with lots of growl and character and no discernable scoop, and sweet highs.

Jeff Carlson, another Edenite, and uses up to three D112XLTs powered by a WT550. Here are a few comments he's made over on the forum:

A single D112XLT cuts the mustard with 5-string against drums and piano at church. I use just one with a WT550 at church gigs and band practice. A 5-string does not dent this cab even in bridge pickup mode or with some enhance. When I need good tone and less volume, 1 cab does the job.

Two 12" cabs will cover most gigs, and is overkill at rehearsals if they are close to the drummer and singer. I keep my rig away from them and away from walls or corners that add db gain. This summer I am using three D112XLTs with my WT550 volume at 10:00 - outdoors.

Obviously you can go bigger with 4x10s and 6x10s but that's not the point - the D112XLT allows you to scale up or down at will...they easily fit three wide in my Subaru wagon.

Endorser Kim Farrar uses a single D112XLT with a WT405. She loves the portability, noting that she can load in her entire rig (bass included) in a single trip. As for the tone, she says:

I want tone like butter: sweet, rich and creamy. The D112XLT gives me all the tone I ever hoped for.

And a few other comments from the forum:

Sounds very rich with deep bottoms and bright highs. Also very portable.

I for one love my D112XLT cab.

I will join in and say that I love my D112XLT (extension cab, not the combo). It really makes my Metro shine, but beyond that it makes *every amp I own* sound bigger, deeper, and smoother, but still provides a tight, clear tone and quick response.

There you have it. If you're looking for tons of tone in a small, efficient package, the D112XLT deserves serious consideration. Audition one at your local dealer and you, too, will agree that good things come in small packages.
