Roy I just finished giving juries (playing final exams) at Belmont University. Several of my students had worked on "Teen Town" by the late Jaco Pastorius for their juries. Since the Jaco piece uses a lot of the approach tone concepts we've looked at for the last few columns, I thought I'd put all of this together and give you a really challenging piece to work on for the Holidays.

Like the Jaco composition, this piece uses this progression:

C7-A7-F7-D7

over and over. Jaco used this as the harmonic lynchpin for several of his compositions. Notice that sometimes the bass line starts on the root and sometimes it starts on other chord tones or approach tones.

This one is a little tricky, so take your time and learn the notes before you play it along with the track.
