One of my favorite intervals to use in writing and improvisation is the 6th interval. It has a chordal sound because if you invert a 6th you'll get either a major or minor third.
The formula for 6ths in a Major scale is: major/major/minor/major/major/minor/minor/major. Remember that a minor 6th is 8½ steps above a note while a major 6th is one ½ step higher at 9. I've written out an F major scale played in 6ths. In addition, I've also included a stock 6th-based lick that you may have heard many guitarists and saxophonists play. Finally, for the brave few out there I've included "6th Sense" which is an original 12 bar blues head for a Blues in F. Take it slow and learn all the twists and turns before you play along with the track. For added fun, take it up one octave!
