Roy One of the most fundamental - and the most neglected aspects! - of bass playing is timing and "pocket". It's just not as glamorous as hyper-slapped 16ths, 2-handed tapping or the latest technique of the month. However, it's more important than all of those things. If the bass player is the heart of the band, then a bass player with funny time makes the band feel like a person with a heart condition -- Not Good!

I've written a set of mixed rhythms in quarters, eighths, triplets, and sixteenth notes. Sometimes you're not playing the downbeat but have to wait for the upbeats. Go back to the lesson on the foot tap system if you need a refresher. I've given you the exercises in tempos of 80 and 100 bpm. Don't just play single notes; practice scales, chord arpeggios and whatever else you like with these rhythmic variations. Stay tuned!
