Timing Studies, Part 2

RoyOne of the other ways I practice my timing is to set the metronome click on beats 2 and 4 of a 4/4 bar. This is not uncommon in studying Jazz, but I also practice Funk and Rock lines this way. The 2 and 4 is similar to the back beat of a snare drum in heavier music and the Hi-Hat in Jazz and Swing.

The next 3 lines use a click on 2 and 4. I set the tempo at 60 so the actual tempo is 120 (60-x2=120). The challenging thing about practicing like this instead of putting the click on all four beats is that you are responsible for the downbeat-not a bad skill for a bassist.

Try practicing these lines with your own metronome on 2 and 4 at different tempos and you'll find it really helps your timing. Then, go back and practice the bass lines from the earlier columns and you'll find your feel will take a quantum leap. Have fun!
